There are channels of energy that run in regular patterns through the body and over its surface. These energy channels, called ‘meridians’, are like a road map running over and through the body, transporting energy to the organs and tissues.
Everyday stress creates a traffic jam in the meridians, blocking the flow of energy, blocking hormones and nutrient rich blood etc from reaching their biological destination for our health and well-being. Our balance or homeostasis is interrupted and then we experience the effects of stress in our lives.
The meridians are influenced by specific movement, especially around the site of the acu-points – these therapeutic movements can unblock stress-induced traffic jams on your roads (in your meridians) and re-establish healthy traffic flow of energy throughout the body. Meridian yoga can therefore help the body’s internal organs to correct imbalances in digestion, absorption and energy production. Meridian yoga can specifically deal with any stress symptoms, for example in one class we can alleviate back issues, help adrenal fatigue, sleep difficulties including night sweating.
Western or Medical Acupuncture
GP’s and dentists have been using medical acupuncture to help patients deal with pain. Acupuncture is particularly useful in resolving physical problems related to tension, stress and emotional conditions. This technique may relieve pain by releasing endorphins, the body’s natural pain-killing chemicals, and by affecting the part of the brain that governs serotonin, a brain chemical involved with mood.
The scientific explanation for medical acupuncture is that needling the acu-points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals will either trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones which influence the body’s own internal regulating and/or change the experience of pain. This is also the result experienced in meridian yoga sequences.
The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture and meridian yoga results in stimulation of the body’s natural healing abilities and the promotion of physical and emotional wellbeing.
Your seasonal yoga practice is then an annual tune up for every aspect of your body.
